How to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed (When Your Heart Feels Like It Can’t Carry One More Thing)
Have you ever reached the end of the day and realized your body is sitting still, but your mind is still running?
The dishes may be done. The emails may be answered. The kids may finally be asleep. And yet your heart feels tight, your thoughts keep racing, and you can’t seem to relax.
Friend, if that’s you today, I want you to know something before we go any further: you are not failing.
I know what it feels like to carry too much. There have been seasons in my life when I felt like I was holding everyone and everything together—family responsibilities, work, health struggles, and the constant pressure to keep going. I remember lying in bed exhausted and still thinking through tomorrow’s list before I had even finished today.
For a long time, I believed the answer was to try harder, organize better, wake up earlier, or be more productive. But overwhelm isn’t always a time-management problem. Sometimes it’s a heart problem. Sometimes we’ve simply been carrying burdens that were never meant to rest on our shoulders.
The First Thing I Want You to Do
Pause for a moment. Take a slow breath.
Ask yourself:
What feels heaviest right now?
Don’t rush past that question. Name it honestly before God.
Maybe it’s financial stress. Maybe it’s a child you’re worried about. Maybe it’s your health, your marriage, your future, or the pressure to be everything for everyone.
God is not intimidated by your honesty.
What Jesus Says to the Overwhelmed
One of my favorite verses is Matthew 11:28:
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Notice that Jesus doesn’t say, “Come to me once you’ve fixed everything.” He says, “Come to me while you are weary.”
That invitation has changed the way I think about overwhelm. Rest begins not when life becomes easy, but when we bring our weary hearts to Him.
Three Gentle Steps That Help Me When I Feel Overwhelmed
1. Stop trying to solve everything today
When I’m overwhelmed, my mind wants to tackle the next ten problems at once. I’ve learned to ask, “What is the next faithful step?” Usually it’s much smaller than I imagined.
2. Create a few minutes of quiet
Not an hour. Not a perfect morning routine. Just five quiet minutes with God. I’ll open my Bible, read one verse slowly, and sit with it. Those few minutes often calm my heart more than another hour of scrolling my phone.
3. Release what you cannot control
This is the hardest one for me. I like to fix things. But peace began to grow when I started praying, “Lord, this belongs to You more than it belongs to me.”
A Gentle Truth I’m Still Learning
You do not have to earn rest.
I used to think rest was something I could enjoy after I finished everything. The problem is that everything is never finished. There will always be another task, another message, another responsibility.
God’s rest is not a reward for productivity; it is a gift for weary hearts.
If You Need a Place to Begin Today
If your heart feels too tired to figure out a whole new routine, I created something simple for you.
🌿 Finding Rest: A 3-Day Devotional for the Overwhelmed Heart is a free devotional designed for women who feel exactly like we’ve been talking about—tired, anxious, stretched thin, and longing for peace.
Each day includes:
a short Scripture reading
a gentle devotional reflection
one question to help you slow down
a simple prayer
one small step toward rest
You don’t need extra energy to start. You just need a willing heart and a few quiet minutes.
My prayer is that these next three days will help you breathe a little deeper, release what you’ve been carrying, and remember that you are deeply loved by the God who restores weary souls.
Friend, you were never meant to carry the weight of the world alone. Jesus is already holding what feels too heavy for you today.
With grace,
Kelly
