It’s Time to Rest
I used to feel so guilty for taking time off, for not being productive, for not always up and doing something, anything.
I was living by the world's standards. And the world wants to keep you so busy you don't have time for God, for your family, for yourself. The problem with this is that you will get burnt out. I had anxiety, depression, guilt, and I was overwhelmed and overstimulated-which led to panic attacks. I was so tired.
But how can I just turn everything off? How do I stop the endless to-do list in my head? How can I ignore the guilt? I’m a firm believer that when your body has had too much, it’s going to stop you and make you rest. And that’s what happened. For a couple weeks I felt awful. Dizzy, nauseas, jittery, and just not myself. This was the Christmas season, we should’ve been making cookies and watching Christmas movies, and all the fun stuff. Instead, I was on the couch, miserable.
I remember one day as I was reading my Bible, God told me I needed to stop. That it was okay to rest because He rested. And if He can rest, then why can't I?
So, after consideration and push-back (because that’s what we do, right?), I gave in and finally decided that Sundays were my rest days. Other than church, I rest. I stay on the couch and watch movies (and sometimes nap). No cleaning, no laundry, no errands, no work.
To be honest, it wasn’t easy at first. I had to keep telling myself that laundry can wait, that cleaning can wait. It really took some getting used to. The guilt didn’t magically disappear the first time, or the second time. I’m not sure it was gone the third time. But it is now.
Funny enough, the rest of my family has incorporated this as well. I've even heard my little one say, "It's Sunday, it's rest day."
Since starting rest time on Sundays, I’ve began to have rest time in the mornings during the week. When the kids are out of school and I don’t have to get up and get ready, I spend the morning outside on the back porch reading, having conversations with God, and sipping coffee.
Now, my favorite day of the week is Sunday, and my favorite time of day is the morning. I look forward to these times. I’m not as overstimulated or aggravated. My patience is better. I feel so much better.
I say all of this, not to make you feel guilty, but to give you permission. Permission to take time to read, watch a movie, take a bath, sit outside and drink a cup of coffee.
